HEAD INJURY
DO NOT ALLOW OPEN FLAMES AROUND OXYGEN THIS INCLUDES CIGARETTES...OXYGEN IS VERY FLAMMABLE
Patient condition: Did the patient lose consciousness or not? Is the patient conscious now?

Equipment needed: If there was a lose of consciousness or the patient has remained
unconscious use an Oxygen Mask or if there was no lose of consciousness use an oxygen
cannula, Oxygen tank.

Action: Plug oxygen mask into oxygen tank set liter flow regulator between 10-15 lpm flow
position. Watch the oxygen mask for fogging, if it begins to fog up, turn the liter flow up until the
mask no longer is fogging. The patient may only require a nasal cannula set liter flow up to but
no more than 6 lpm.

Cautions: In head injuries there is also at times a  need for c-spine precautions. Also bleeding
from the ears and nose after a head injury could be an indication of a skull fracture.
